Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says that the company plans to transform News Feed that will show you more content from friends & family and less from publishers.
According to the social network product team, this move is designed to encourage people to interact more with the stuff that they actually do see. It will now prioritize helping users have "more meaningful social interactions" versus finding "relevant content". The post has been shared on Thursday by the CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in which he shares his thoughts and also responded to the feedback got from the community. He said, “Posts from businesses, brands and media is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other.”
It is important to know that months before the company went public in 2012, Facebook started featuring "sponsored story" ads in users’ feeds, and it rolled out mobile advertising that same year. Henceforward, annual sales have climbed from $5.1 billion to an estimated $40.2 billion last year. In between, the news feed has become increasingly crowded with advertisements and posts from brands and publications. So the changes were needed, in fact, Zuckerberg has also said earlier that his resolution this year was to fix Facebook, and it looks like he sees this as a step in that direction.
Zuckerberg announced the news through a post, in which he clearly stated that “Now, I want to be clear that by making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down. And if we do the right thing, I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too.” One of the major difference is that the users will see less public content from businesses or publishers and more posts from their friends.
