At least 40 people were killed and many were wounded on Thursday morning, when a scaffolding collapsed at the construction site in China’s Jiangxi Province.

In this deadly accident, at least 40 people were killed when a platform collapsed in Fengcheng city during the construction of a cooling tower. Xinhua further reported, several people are believed to be still stuck in the debris. According to an official of Local Work Safety Administration, the actual death toll is 22; while, news agency Xinhua said that death figure had increased to 40 by midday.

The fire services of Jiangxi province stated that, a total of 32 fire trucks and more than 200 soldiers has been positioned for rescue operation at the construction site. Television footage and photographs posted by Chinese media from the site showed a mass of concrete slabs, steel girders and twisted iron pipes on the ground close to the cooling tower. According to a local newspaper, Jiangxi Daily, in this $1.11 billion project two 168m high cooling towers were being constructed at the Fengcheng city site for the addition of two 1000 megawatt coal-fired power units to the power plant. China has vowed to improve safety measures for such facilities. After a chemical detonation in a major port city of Tianjin, Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping had said, authorities would learn from the lessons from such fatal detonations. In the month of August 2015, more than 170 people were killed in a series of a chemical blast (2 big explosions on 12 August and 8 smaller explosions on 15 August) which had occurred due to the detonation of almost 800 tons of ammonium nitrate.
